Konsthögskolan Umeå Universitet / Sweden
General Info
The Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University is beautifully located on the riverside of Umeåelven in the centre of Umeå. The school started in 1987 in a renovated building, a former factory. Next to Bildmuseet in the Museum area, Gammlia, is the school`s student-run gallery (Galleri 60) situated, 15 minutes walk from the school. The Academy has well equipped workshops for wood, metal, plaster, bronze, printmaking, photo, video and computer-based work. The different workshops are available to all the students. The studies prepare the students to work as professional artists, in Sweden and internationally, or in other areas where artistic experience and knowledge is of importance. The studies focuses on the students individual needs and reflects the creative diversity of contemporary Fine Arts practice and the critical discourse surrounding it. Every student has a studio space and all the students have two tutors, and the schools international team of teachers is available as tutors for each student. The students acquire practical, technical and theoretical competence in the form of studies on their own, as well as taking part in seminars, workshops and exhibition-projects. The group of students is also important instrument of criticism and practical self-help. Students take an active part in the formation of the school`s actvities. The students practice to produce, discuss and write about visual art and other subjects of interest for production, mediation and consumption of visual art. The school`s international team of teachers and the students, have good possibilities to investigate the role art and artists have had and have today in society- socially, economically and legally. The students also train their abilities for critical analyses of thoughts and ideas in the fields of culture, its contexts and backgrounds. Both the student`s and the teacher`s participation, in the use of the Fine Arts Academy, as a place or a situation where something can happen, is significant. The Academy also offers postgraduate courses (40 credits). In 2004 we start to give courses in Aesthetics, 2 courses at 20 credits each. Ongoing research projects are financed by the Swedish Research Council "Research processes in Fine Arts"- A joint project between art and science. The Academy also have a re research project aiming to Ph. D.
